Branded and compounded are different decisions

A familiar ingredient does not make two products equivalent.

Start with regulatory status

FDA-approved products undergo review for safety, effectiveness and quality for their approved uses. Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved; FDA does not review them in the same way before marketing. Their role depends on legal and individual clinical circumstances.

Ask for the actual preparation

Get the ingredient, route and dispensing pharmacy, and ask the licensed clinician why that particular preparation is being considered. Do not interpret a provider’s broad menu as evidence that every option is appropriate or legally available to every patient.

Compare costs only after clarity

A low quoted price does not establish clinical equivalence. Keep approved and compounded options visibly labeled in your notes. FDA’s current guidance is the primary reference for concerns about unapproved GLP-1 products.

Keep the conversation going.
